      Frogs of Manangatang

Posted on June 8, 2009 08:48 by Ben

The night before last there was a ripper storm in Manangatang - 30mm perhaps? - we received 10mm on the farm - and there are puddles everywhere. Last night it was a bit overcast, the frogs were calling from the dam and I thought I'd drive around and see what else I could hear. The result: Mallee Spadefoot Toads everywhere!

I heard spadefoots in some dams on Jones Road and in town dams that regularly receive runoff, but surprisingly couldn't hear any from the town reservoir. It's very noisy around town, but while at the reservoir I could hear one frog that I thought must have been at the school. I walked through the school to discover it was actually in a paddock south of town! The calls travel well. I finally heard it in a puddle of runoff water about 100m2, at a low point in the paddock. There are plenty of washaway holes in the tracks near the railway line where the puddle is, so there must be regular enough water to keep at least one alive. The other place I heard a frog was in the town stormwater drain - fairly reliably wet.

I've put the locations into a kml file for anyone that uses Google Earth and is interested - it looks like this (below, also includes locations of the pond and greywater dam). Interestingly my locations have the same position error as the road overlays in Google Earth - they are shown about 20m east and 10m south of where they should be.
