We have been harvesting lately and bit distracted. It has rained several times but no frog calls - I think that might be because there are lots of young frogs around. It would be bad for survival if a male frog was calling attention to the fact that there were young frogs around at the moment.
Soon after the last post (Nov 14) I built an extra compartment on to the tadpole container on the back verandah, with some dirt and grass in it, to give the frogs some alternative habitat (they seemed rather crowded). I think that when it was raining some of the frogs made the decision to go and explore the wide world anyway - so there is now only one frog inhabiting the container (that I can count, photo below) and plenty of mosquito wrigglers in the water. I've been trying to follow the progress of our last tadpole, which was very big and slow to develop. I thought maybe a Pobblebonk? It did get arms but has recently disappeared so I'm not sure whether it's just hiding well or whether it's bounced out of the container too.
The remaining frog was tonight sitting on top of the container, keeping an eye out for insects under the verandah light:
For scale purposes, the mesh is chicken mesh.
