Frogs in the dam at dusk, just as rain begins to fall, August 8 2008.
The clicking sounds are male
Spotted Marsh Frog.
There is a soft "duk-duk-duk-duk" call in the background that we thought may have
been a
Mallee Spadefoot Toad
but is likely to be a variation on the southern call race of the Spotted Marsh Frog. |

Frogs in the dam at dusk, September 5 2008.
The
Spotted Marsh Frogs
have been joined by a
Pobblebonk. |

Frogs in the pond early evening, September 5 2008.
As far as we know, the pond has at least three male
Spotted Marsh Frogs
in it. They have gradually migrated from the dam about 50m away (dam frogs are audible
in the background). |

October 4 2008. The Pobblebonk was right, it did rain. 3mm yesterday but we (and no doubt it) were
hoping for more! This recording from the dam is dominated by the
Pobblebonk but at one point you can hear a Spotted Marsh Frog (picked out in the
preview). Much softer than before but they must still be there (can't hear them
from the house). |

November 8 2008. 17mm of rain yesterday, and tonight we have heard the first Pobblebonk
calls from the pond. |
 |
 |
June 2 2009. 13mm of rain this week, 12mm last week, wonderfully wet! Tonight for
the first time we heard theMallee Spadefoot Toad
from the dam. Judging by the variations in calls there are at least three males.
Almost as exciting as the first frog recording!!! |

The first frog recording (very exciting!) from the dam, early evening July 16 2008.
The clicking sounds are male
Spotted Marsh Frog. |

The first frog in the pond, August 5 2008.
We first heard this
Spotted Marsh Frog
back on July 22 but he was very shy. Took a couple of weeks to catch him on record
(and only then after 0.5 hours of silence) as he would go quiet as soon as he could
see me.

Frogs from the dam on the same evening (August 5 2008). |

Frogs from the dam, August 7 2008. They start off quiet but then get into it. |

October 2 2008. Since the last lot of eggs in the dam, the frogs there have been
very quiet, though most nights we have been able to hear at least one Spotted Marsh
Frog from the pond.
This is a celebratory recording because at least one dam frog is back! We heard
the Pobblebonk tonight and hope it may be forecasting rain for tomorrow. The quality
is not so good but you can hear crickets etc. I also heard a bat - something flying
fairly low and making a rapid clicking sound, but didn't catch it with the recorder. |
